A message for parents/carers of Y6 children.

I know it seems a while yet but obviously Y6 pupils will soon be leaving the school and onto different experiences challenges etc. I know that this has been discussed in your meetings but each year I try to put a variety of PDFs on the website especially for the Y6 children/parents.

I am looking for photographs of the following:

Previous years' class photos.

Any school teams, musical instrument, club etc photos

Photographs of the children at any age either in school events or family occasions, holidays etc. It's great to see the children when they were younger and for people to see if they can now identify them. As we all know children do change.

Photos can be sent into school and I will return them usually the next day (please make sure that your name is on them and I will take great care of them) or they may be messaged to me via FB or my email address is on the Contacts page of the website.

I can receive photos anytime from today but the final date is Monday 24th April the date children return after the Easter break.

Thank you all in anticipation of receiving some brill photos.

Paul

Education begins at home – Information from Welsh Government regarding maths.

Welsh Government (WG) has spoken and listened to parents/carers, and one recurring theme seems to be a fear of maths and supporting their child at home.  WG recognises the importance of parental engagement being the vital link between school and the home.

WG has produced online videos and these can be found by searching for maths resources on the WG’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/welshgovernment and the online booklets to use in conjunction with the videos can be found at www.gov.wales/schoolsinfo4parents under Education begins at home – Maths Resources for Parents.

All resources are featured on WG’s Facebook page under the Maths Resources tab www.facebook.com/beginsathome

Dear Parents and Carers,

In response to a few enquiries received today I wanted to provide you all with the same clear and consistent message.

We currently have risk of some snow, sleet or rain for the early part of tomorrow afternoon. Thankfully it would appear that there is very limited potential for any disruptive levels of snow in Newport, however, on higher ground such as the Brecon Beacons and possibly the Heads of the Valleys up to 4cm may fall.

I do not anticipate this impacting on school in any way on this occasion but I just wanted to remind you that updates with regard to snow closure are always posted regularly on the school website.  http://www.malpasparkprimary.co.uk/       Twitter @Malpas_Park

Kind regards,

Kate Guest

03.01.17 Hip Hip Hooray there's school today.

02.01.17 Time flies so here is a gentle reminder that school opens tomorrow (3rd Jan) usual times.  Happy New Year.

15.12.16 Our very final Christmas event is the whole school Christmas Service tomorrow at 09:15 whereby we invite our families to join us in a special celebration of Christmas. The rehearsal for this which took place this morning went very well. However, as it involves the whole school and our numbers on roll are rising rapidly, I am keen to raise your awareness to the fact that the School Hall will be VERY full tomorrow. Having determined the level of risk in recognition of this, I would strongly recommend that numbers in attendance to support each child are kept to a minimum and I must insist that pushchairs are left outside.

I would be very grateful if the children could wear their smartest school uniform accompanied by a Christmas jumper and/or ‘adornment’. This could take the form of a small piece of tinsel worn in the hair or on the uniform, a Christmas hairband or a badge – whatever you already have at home is simply the request, no new purchases necessary.

15.12.16 Our last performance of the term is tomorrow at 09.15.

12.12.16 Y3 and Y4 perfom "Poppins - it takes three" tomorrow morning and the Foundation Phase has its Christmas Party in the afternoon.

Years 3 and 4 Productions of ‘Mary Poppins; It Takes Two’ Postponed

Dear Parents and Carers,

Unfortunately Mrs Jones and Miss Williams have been unable to attend school this week due to severe sickness.  With school policy being that following illness such as this neither members of staff nor children should return to school until 48 hours following the final incidence, it is unlikely that either will return before Thursday of this week.  I am sure you can appreciate that the possibility of contamination across the school must be minimised.

Although supply cover has been secured throughout this week it has not been consistent enough to allow purposeful rehearsals.  As a result, the production will not be ready for an audience next week.  I feel it is most unfair to ask children to perform on stage feeling unprepared as this will have a negative impact upon their confidence.

Therefore I have made the decision to postpone the performances of the Lower Key Stage 2 productions planned for next Monday (5th) and Tuesday (6th) in the hope that families are able to re-arrange time out of work in order to attend or re-organise the attendance of family representatives.

The performances of ‘Mary Poppins; It Takes Three’ will now take place on:-

  • Tuesday 13th December at 10:00
  • Thursday 15th December at 13:30

I have attempted to provide as much notice as possible by making this decision today.  Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused but the change is unfortunately unavoidable. The scheduled dates and times for all other performances next week remains unchanged.

Yours sincerely,

Kate Guest

Friday 18th November 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

In September 2016 I entered my sixth year as Head Teacher of Malpas Park Primary School having dedicated my career to serving the children and community of Malpas Park as a Class Teacher since 1995 and as Deputy Head Teacher since 2007.

Many of my colleagues at the school have also demonstrated commitment for similar amounts of time and in some cases even longer. However, regardless of their length of service, the dedication of every member of staff at Malpas Park to do the best for and by every child at the school is unquestionable.

I am acutely aware that the Teachers, the Learning Support Assistants and I have always been very well supported and respected by the vast majority of our parents and family members, as indeed is still the case, and this is greatly appreciated.

Those of you who know the school well and regularly contribute to the highly effective partnership fully appreciate that pupil wellbeing is at the heart of all we do and largely responsible for the success of our children.  It is important to note that this theory also applies to the members of staff.

Throughout the last week staff at the school and I have been subjected to nothing short of a 'battering' via social media and this has hit our morale.  Although the negativity posted and shared online represents the views of only a few it has had impact because what is seen unfortunately cannot be unseen. Additionally any negative postings will always trigger the 'no smoke without fire' mentality which is often harmful.

In the event that an inappropriate forum for comment is used by a parent or carer in the future it is important that interested individuals make contact with the school to discuss what they have read. The staff and I deserve the opportunity for our voice to be heard before judgements are made and additional ‘fuel is added to the fire’ causing unnecessary hurt as a result of malicious gossip.

Some of the comments posted over the last week are derogatory to the point that one wonders why, if all that had been stated were indeed true or at least factually correct, those parents would continue sending their child to Malpas Park Primary School.  I can only deduce that the purpose of posting is to meet the needs of the parent as opposed to the child.

As Head Teacher of the school I offer the following opportunities for parents and carers to share their concerns with regards to all aspects of school:-

- An open door policy whereby parents can more often than not catch me before or after school
- I am available until 19.30 on each evening during the weeks of Parents’ and Carers’ Consultation
- Informal Parent and Carers Forums are held on the first Thursday of every new half term

The workforce at Malpas Park is largely a well-established, professional team.  The whole school community is fortunate that essentially we have a low turnover of staff which facilitates sound and seamless knowledge of all the children in our daily care.  This consequently allows appropriate, considered provision for each individual and the establishment of firm foundations for learning.  We operate with due care, thought and respect for one another.

I am certain that those of you who know me well will appreciate the strength of feeling that has driven me to take the time to write to the school community today with the support of our Governing Body.  Our school is by no means perfect, but neither is any organisation, and I genuinely feel that I offer every possible opportunity for parents to express their views, both positive and negative, in a forum which will enable discussion with mutual respect for differences and establish a way of working together towards improvement.

We have been treated unfairly this week by only a tiny minority but we are hurt and frankly deserve better. As we move towards the latter part of this Autumn Term I am in no doubt whatsoever that we will all manage to pick ourselves up, put this behind us and once again go above and beyond our duties to make Christmas a special time for every single child at Malpas Park Primary School.

Yours sincerely,

Kate Guest and the Governing Body of Malpas Park Primary School

17.11.16 There will be no Hip Hop until January. Please arrange to collect your child at 3:30 p.m. Thank you.#gompps

08.11.16 Reminder for rugby club - due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to withdraw from today's Tag Rugby Festival at Newport High.

31.10.16 On Wednesday this week the school will sadly be saying goodbye to Miss Sergent from Reception class.  The school is truly going to miss her and she has been an absolute asset to Malpas Park Primary School.  We thank you for all that you have done for us.  We wish you all the best in your new adventure at British Airways.

Miss Sergent tends to be camera shy in school but here are a few photos which we hope will give her great memories.

Goodbye, good luck and stay in touch.

27.10.16

The school's rugby club has been invited to take part in a Tag Rugby festival at Newport High School on Tuesday 8th November (more information will follow next week along with permission slips for you to sign).

As we have only recently started skill sessions I have arranged for some additional time next week in order to practise ball skills and to develop game skills.  The children therefore will need their kit in school on three days next week.  Tuesday's session will be as normal from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.  On Wednesday there will be a session during school time from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. and on Thursday once again during school time from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m.

I have a limited number of complimentary tickets for Newport Gwent Dragons' match against Connacht on Friday 4th November at 7.15 p.m.  The tickets do not state that they are for children only and therefore an adult will also be able to attend free of charge.  Depending on the interest in the tickets initially it is restricted to two tickets per child.  If you would like to receive some tickets then please email Mrs Kindred at school, no later than 3.30 p. m. on Monday 31st October, with details of you child's name, class and ideally how many tickets you would like to receive.

Thank you.
