The Key Stage 2 Curriculum

Key Stage 2  Ages 7-11 (Y3 - Y6)

The curriculum at KS2 aims to build upon the experiential learning in the Foundation Phase.  It is divided into discrete subjects, with a focus on the core areas of Literacy and Numeracy.  The National Literacy and Numeracy Framework is currently being introduced into schools across Wales, to develop the key kills of numeracy and literacy throughout all areas of the curriculum.

The subjects making up the KS2 curriculum are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Welsh as a Second Language (WSL)
  • Science
  • Design and Technology
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and design
  • Music
  • Physical Education

In addition to these subjects, we also provide learning experiences for Personal and Social Education.

A Creative Curriculum

At Malpas Park we endeavour to provide our pupils with a broad, balanced and creative curriculum. Our standards are high and we encourage all pupils to reach for the stars. By immersing pupils in exciting activities and presenting a variety of learning opportunities, we encourage them to establish their own learning styles, to grow as individuals and to develop as life-long learners.

Our creative curriculum allows us to deliver a skills based curriculum through projects that are chosen to stimulate and inspire learning. Pupils have an opportunity to shape their curriculum by having a say in what they want to learn, how they want to learn and how they want to record their findings.

Each project starts with a 'wow' factor, an event, visit or visitor designed to 'hook' pupils in, engage and interest them. Overviews are shared with pupils and parents at the beginning of each project so that learning can be supported at home. The partnership between home and school is vital if children are to flourish and to reach their full potential.
